The photo on the left is a close up of an inked etching plate almost ready to be run through the press.
To get to this stage, the plate had been covered completely with etching ink and then buffed with a tarlatan cloth. A final newspaper wipe is done before the plate is layered with damp paper and run through the etching press.
The three photos show me doing to the final newspaper wipe, inspecting the print on the press bed, and reviewing the result.
The last two photos illustrate the development of print states showing the evolution of an image.
